AUSINSPECT is pleased to advise that we have once again advanced our technology base to benefit our service for our clients. In October 2000 a new handheld pocket computer was released by COMPAQ, the Compaq Ipaq is a very powerful computer for such a small device, this started a new dimension to the way we carry out our inspections, with the use of Microsoft Pocket Word I was able to write the majority of the inspection report on site, cutting out the dangers of communication errors from the time of inspection till the report is written. Due to the great improvements to my inspections and reports that the Compaq Ipaq provided my thoughts immediately wanted to go one step further.
My vision has always been to have the ability to compile a full report on site without effecting the quality of inspection, I purchase numerous laptop computers, these were bulky and needed to be set up in one location within the inspected property, this was ineffective as one needed to return to the location of the computer on a constant basis, this extended the time of an inspection to some 3.5 - 4 hours. Real Estate agents and vendors did not accept this as it was too time consuming. It was only a matter of time till my vision could be workable, Sony has developed a small computer that can be handheld or mounted on my forearm, this has the power of a desktop computer with all the Microsoft programs, this gives me a tool that has enabled me to write the entire report on the spot, process photographs and if needed create PDF files.
The major advantage is that what I see, when I see it, is written directly into the body of the report, therefore nothing can be forgotten or misreported. The report gives an accurate record of the inspection that has been carried out, and amazingly, actually saves time. The other advantage is that due to the format of my report, I can't continue onto the next item until the item on screen has been completed, therefore providing a fool proof checklist.
This is a major step forward for our business and in the way inspections are done and reports are written, it would not surprise me that the system I currently use will become an industry standard in the coming years. It is difficult to outline the great advantages that have become available recently and those that will become available in the future without seeing these changes at work.
