In the modern world of today it has been realised the real importance of trees to the environment in which we live.

Trees generally provide us with amenity, shade and soil stability. Trees are generally considered to have little impact on the oxygen we breathe, this oxygen generally comes from the vast Oceans.

Trees are now generally protected in Australia by the Tree Preservation Act, therefore mature trees are more common in the urban environment than in the past. The planting of trees is also encouraged, although special care should be undertaken when a plant specimen is chosen for certain locations.

Some tree species have more vigorous root systems that cause damage to inground plumbing and foundations of buildings, these species should be planted well away from structures.

Certain tree species such as a Camphor Laurel  are normally replanted by bird droppings that have picked up the seedlings in other areas, these trees can become very large specimens in a relatively short period of time, the tree mass and weaker limb structure  will usually make future removal or pruning expensive. Numerous buildings in the Sydney region have had to be partially and/or completely demolished due to structural damage caused by this tree species.

Trees on neighbouring properties and overhang a boundary line are referred to as Pseudo trees, these trees although not located within the boundaries of a property may have an impact on the surrounding properties or may provide amenity to neighbours and/or the general public. As trees of this type may have an impact on a property it is important to be aware of the possible risks the tree may present, the rights of the tree owner, the obligations of the owner and the rights of the neighbouring property.

Stephen Koelewyn found that his lack of knowledge in arboriculture was restricting his ability to carry out comprehensive building and pest reports, therefore Steve saw a need to study Arboriculture to understand the impact of trees on buildings, how to prune tree roots without causing harm and/or disease to the tree and provide protection to buildings/structures in close proximity to mature trees and vise-a-versa.

• Trees often have limbs that could be a risk to property and persons.
• Trees are often weakened by poor environmental conditions.
• Trees can be exposed to significant pest damage that will weaken the tree.
• Tree roots may have decay that may destabilise the tree.
